7 Simple Rules To Live By For A Happy Life

Do you ever feel stuck in negativity? Or are you one of those happy-go-lucky types who sees the silver lining in every situation? If you're in the latter category, high five to you, friend!
When I find myself stuck in a rut, I reach for a dose of gratitude. I try to focus on the simple things in my life that bring me joy, like the feeling of freshly dried towels or a hug from my husband.
Whatever happiness is to you, these seven strategies are sure to inspire greater happiness and well-being starting today!
1. Manage your energy, not your time.
You can't fully take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself. And if you don’t master your body — i.e. your capacity to maximize your health, energy and vitality — all the career success, money or contribution in the world will be worthless.
Not sure where to start? Sketch a pie chart that represents your daily energy spent and notice where you're investing your energy. Is the majority of your precious energy spent by taking care of your children, work, problem-solving or stress over finances? Pay attention to how much time is spent on self-care. If there’s a deficit in this category, it’s time to prioritize you.
2. Focus on what you can add to your life — not what you "should" subtract.
This advice is often given for changing dietary habits: instead of cutting out certain foods (and thus feeling deprived), it's easier to start adding healthy foods. The idea is that, over time, the "good" foods will crowd out the less-desirable foods.
The same could be applied to almost any habit. For example, say my goal is to spend less time on social media. Instead of setting a time limit on tweeting, I could simply add in to my schedule some other activity that I enjoy!
This strategy also works well when it comes to avoiding judging myself. Rather than trying to stop being critical about myself, I can focus on adding more self-love and gratitude.
3. Practice letting go of wanting it so bad.
Isn't it crazy how we invest our happiness into things we may lose? The new iPhone, the relationship, the career, our beauty? I've been thinking a lot lately about the impermanence of our lives and notice that most of us rarely feel successful or satisfied or “finished.” There's always something else to check off the list that we presume will land us smack-dab in the middle of forever happiness.
The truth is, it doesn’t matter how much you get, you're left wanting more. Ambivalence can help. Too often books and magazines tell us to cut out pictures of what we want, create vision boards and repeat it as a mantra to ourselves over and over again. Sure, it's great to get clarity on what you want. But maybe sometimes we want “it” too bad?
Try to care less. Don't let the pursuit of happiness become the source of unhappiness.
4. Practice compassion for yourself.
No human can be perfect all the time. Understand that you may not be able to give 100% every single day and that’s OK. Agree to do the best, to your best ability with each aspect of your day. You will be pleasantly surprised how much more successful you can be with this slight attitude adjustment.
5. Smile.
It's such a simple, powerful gesture, but many of us forget to smile. So the next time you have a headache, crack a smile instead of popping a pain killer. Research has shown that just the act of smiling can make you feel better.
6. Create an "inner circle" support group.
Spend your time with people who are moving in the direction that you want to go. Want to be your fittest, healthiest, tightest self, for example? Spend more time with your green-juice-drinking, outside-loving friends.
Put thought into creating a circle of people who uplift you, believe in the best of you, and share similar moral fiber. This just might be your most important step to achieving greater joy and making big things happen for you and those you love. And if you're not inspired by your circle, it may be time to consider a friend detox.
7. Have a feel good formula of healthy habits.
You'll never change anything in your life until you change what you do on a daily basis. Routines create consistency, which is an essential ingredient in creating a life you love. When you’ve hit a bump in the road, having “feel good” healthy habits will keep you on the right path.
Here are some of my go-tos to stay on track:
  • Close friends and mentors to be there when I am feeling overwhelmed
  • A morning meditation routine (10 minutes) that allows me to sink into my body + set healthy intentions for the day ahead
  • Workouts that I know I get results from and that make me feel good
  • Time to cozy up and engage in one of my favorite past times: reading
  • A refrigerator of delicious and nourishing foods. I pack a cooler for my car if I am visiting with clients all day

Follow These Six Easy Tips for Eye Health

Think for a moment about how often we use our sight every day. Our vision allows us to admire nature's beauty around us, enjoy a good book, and appreciate the faces of our loved ones. Vision is so important in our daily life, in fact, according to the American Optometric Association's (AOA) annual American Eye-Q® survey, 40 percent of Americans worry about losing their eyesight over their ability to walk or hear.1However, despite eyesight being among our most treasured of senses, we don't often take the steps needed to maintain our eye health throughout our lives.



There are six easy ways to ensure you are routinely on the right path to maintaining good eye health and protecting your vision.
  1. See your eye doctor regularly.
    When you are seeing well, or not having a noticeable visual impairment, it's easy to forget about making an appointment to see your eye doctor. Eye exams are not just for people experiencing changes in their visual acuity. An eye exam is an essential way to detect even the slightest changes to your eye health and, it can also detect other systemic health issues, such as glaucoma and diabetes, before there are any symptoms.2,4,6
    If you presently wear corrective lenses, you should prepare for your office visit by bringing your current lens prescription or eye glasses, if available. Regardless of whether you currently have a vision correction issue, you should always bring your family's complete health history.2,4 Often, patients don't realize the connection between a larger systemic illness within the body and eye health. Alerting your doctor to any potential issues can help guide your doctor to the right course of action during your exam.

  2. Protect your eyes.
    It's important to protect your eyes from the environment. Most homes and offices have very dry air which can cause eye dryness and irritation.2 Using a humidifier to control air quality and lubricating eye drops are great options to help protect your ocular surface from irritation and dryness.
    The sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can also be harmful to your eyes. In fact, a lifetime of UV light exposure can increase your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.2 Protect your eyes as you would your skin by wearing sunglasses with 100 percent AVA and AVB protection.4 By the time you have reached 18 years of age, you have received 80 percent of your lifetime exposure, which is why it is also critically important to take these same sunglass precautions with children.2 Practice eye safety by using protective eyewear while playing sports or working with hazardous materials. This will help to protect and shield your eyes.


  1. Eat well to protect your eyesight.
    While we have all heard that eating carrots are good for your eyes, there are other food options that do a much better job of protecting your eyesight. Studies have shown that antioxidants and nutrients that are linked to a lower risk of common eye conditions include lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins C and E.3
    By regularly eating these foods that are rich in protective nutrients and antioxidants you can help maintain good eye health and potentially prevent some troubling eye conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma.3
    • Leafy greens such as spinach and kale2, 3, 4, 5
    • Cold-water fish like salmon, tuna and other oily fish2, 3, 4, 5
    • Nuts, beans, eggs and other non-meat proteins such as soy3, 5
    • Dark pigment fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, cherries and grapes 2,3
    • Citrus fruits and juices5
    • Avocados3
    • Broccoli3
    • Tea3
  2. Using computers? Follow the 20-20-20 rule.
    Staring at your computer or other digital devices can cause major strain on your eyes and can also cause dry eyes, blurry vision, and headaches.5 To help combat these issues, simply rest your eyes every 20 minutes by looking 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds.2, 4, 5
  3. Say NO to smoking.
    Smoking makes you more susceptible to developing macular degeneration, progresses the development of cataracts and can cause optic nerve damage.4 If you currently smoke, engage in a smoking cessation program to quit.5
  4. Taking care of your overall health protects your eyes too.
    You know the importance of a healthy diet and the affect it has on your eye health. But did you know that exercise can also help by increasing circulation, which can lower pressure in the eyes?7 This can help those with glaucoma - a group of diseases caused by an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP), or pressure inside the eye.8
    Exercise also helps maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic diseases, increasing your chance of major eye diseases. If you are having trouble maintaining a healthy weight or reaching your weight goals, talk to your doctor.4 Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Laughter always works as the best medicine for one’s mental health by adding joy and zest to life, reduces anxiety and fear, mental pain, stress, conflict, and tension. It also improves people’s mood.
