Surviving a Newborn: 8 Tips for New Moms

During pregnancy, we all vow to be supermom; the mom who never lets her baby cry or misses out on an opportunity to bond. Soon after baby is home and sleep swindles to 2 hours per night, all of those supermom hopes seem to float out of the door. It is okay; we have all been there. It is hard to adjust to motherhood. Anyone would find it to be a tiresome and never-ending task. You can make it through the transition, as the rest of us have. These 8 tips will help you relax, take care of yourself and your baby, and make it through that adjustment period that can be quite overwhelming.

1. Put the Baby Books Down
We all love Dr. Sears, but if you continually read books that tell you what your newborn should look like, sound like, eat, and like to play, you will never have the chance to get to know the special little gal or guy that you birthed. Those books can only tell you so much about being a parent. Each child is unique.

2. Forget Housework
Adjusting to baby’s feeding schedule isn’t easy. You are going to be tired and perhaps overwhelmed. Now is the time to put the ‘F’ in housework- forget it! Sleep when baby sleeps. Have someone step in to give you a helping hand. The most important thing in the world is that you are okay and feeling your best.

3. Ignore what they Say
You’re going to get a lot of (unwanted) advice for the next 18 years. Sometimes from people you know and trust; sometimes from complete strangers. Take all of it in stride. As we mentioned, you must find out who your child is. No one can tell you what your child should be doing. Take all of the advice in stride, thank them and move along.

4. Get out of the House
If it is nothing more than a 10-minute stroll down the road, make sure that you get out of the house every single day. This gives you time to clear your mind.

5. It is Okay if you can’t stick to a schedule
Everyone is probably telling you how important it is to stick to a schedule. It is certainly helpful to have a schedule, but this can come later on. Getting through these adjustments is most important right now. Let baby pave the way for the day.

6. Get ready for the day
Even if you and baby are stuck inside all day, make sure that you get up in the morning, brush your teeth and your hair, apply a bit of makeup and dress up. This will help you feel great about yourself.

7. Calm Down, Mommy
Spit-up is okay, unless of course it is landing 2 foot across the room. Your baby’s poop will be different colors. Crying is normal, even when baby is well-taken care of. Most new moms worry about everything. Do not worry, and take a load off.

8. Take lots of Photos
Even if it means nothing to anyone else in this world, it will mean a lot to you. Have a camera ready to snap away pics at your baby. And be sure to bring out the video camera, too!
